MEXT Complete Guide

Embassy vs university recommendation, research plans, exams, and what the Japanese government scholarship usually covers.

Who this is for

Applicants pursuing Embassy Recommendation or University Recommendation under Japan’s MEXT scholarship, especially research students aiming at master’s or doctoral enrolment.

Two tracks — pick one deliberately

Embassy Recommendation follows your country’s Japanese embassy calendar. University Recommendation is nominated by a Japanese university. Mixing advice from both tracks is the most common mistake.

What to do

  1. Read the current MEXT notice for your category

Undergraduate, research student and specialised training categories have different age and document rules. Confirm the stipend amount in the notice for your category — do not copy last year’s figure.

  2. Decide Embassy vs University Recommendation

Embassy tracks often include written exams and an interview. University tracks start with a professor or graduate school nomination path.

  3. Draft a focused research plan

Where possible, contact a prospective supervisor before you apply on the research track. Vague “I want to study in Japan” plans fail early.

  4. Use Study in Japan and your embassy as primary sources

Deadlines differ by country and cannot be copied safely from generic “MEXT 2026” blog posts.

  5. After nomination, follow only official placement instructions

April and October intakes have different arrival steps. Ignore agents who claim they can “guarantee” MEXT.
